"We´re Gonna Ratatata..."
The annals of music history are filled with countless protest songs – songs about breaking from the narrowness of relationships, systems, families – in short: songs about deserting, about the moment of turning away and letting go. Jonas Poppe, songwriter of Berlin band „Kissogram“ has now, in one of the central pieces of the
upcoming album „Rubber and Meat“, come up with the perhabs most poetic, light-weighted and elegant claim for the moment of derserting: „We're gonna Ratatata...“
Matched with great sound (analogously mixed by Pelle „The Hives“ Gunnerfeldt), Jonas cynical expression (it's been a while since you heard an Rrrr rolled liked that) and his cool voice, which is not for no reason often compared to Lou Reed, „The Deserter“ emerges as a song in your ear with the potential of becoming dictum.
Musically, Kissogram have moved away from their electronic contemporaries Digitalism, Justice or Hot Chip, not least thanks to Joe Dilworth (Ex-Stereolab, Ad N To X) on drums. Something analog, warm, rock'n'rollesque, almost blues-like uncontrollable has found it's way into the sound. With it's structure, arrangement and dynamics (the „ratatata“ leads into an orgiastic chorus with a fat guitar riff, bass- and synth monsters), the closest we have to compare is Blur's classic „Song No 2“. In short: „everywhere, everywhere, Ratatata...“
And since the lyrics are sparkling so wonderfully, here they are in written and spoken:
"The Deserter"
wartime, baby, i'm leaving you now. It's like new year's eve, but better somehow
i'll carry your picture near my ha-heart - ah come on, boys, we're gonna ratatata...
i'm feeling good but it's crazy somehow. You're a bit crinkled, but pretty, a-ha
i love you, i miss you, i bla bla bla - but outside the boys do some ratatata...
i'm feeling good, you know, it could have been worse. You're a bit tattered and i'm a bit hurt some boys have left me, they're stupid, a-ha- everywhere, everywhere ratatata...
i'm alright, baby, darling don't cry. I may disappear but i surely won't die my eyes are wide open, my bed is so far. Can't hear me, can't hear you, just ratatata...
it's morning, it's morning, but i'm really tired. Good morning, baby, goodbye and good night. Boys are crying, sounds like hahahaha - i'm going, i'm going, ratatata...
